I'm doing almost the same thing when I'm preparing to run this module. A tip would be to heighten the fearful atmosphere of the Keep (which was mention in the book but I've heard that many just turn in into a hack fest) that will remind the players the severe consequence if they fail to stop him. Another tip would be to give PCs a clue that the ranger is somehow related with Kalarel very early on so that they will be better prepared for the Kobold Lair or the Graveyard fight.
