How and when to fudge without dice
I don’t cheat when I roll, but I cheat everywhere else.
What Counts as Fudging?
- Changing the game during the game.
What Doesn’t Count?
- Anything you do during prep.
- Rolling the dice instead of making choices.
Why Fudge?
- To change the fun and pacing of the game.
- To move things along.
- To help the mechanics meet the story.
Where to Fudge?
- Hit points, damage, number of attacks, and number of monsters.
- What success or failure looks like on ability checks.
- Changing the result of random encounters.
- Monster and NPC behavior.
- Quantum ogre.
When Not to Fudge
- To remove agency from a character or player.
- Because you’re mad.
- Because you can.
The Resistance on the Dials
- Start first with what makes sense in the world. Bend the world for the fun of the game.
- Dials and levers have resistance and want to spring back to the default of the world.
